It is commonly thought that there is a big difference between SPF factors. For example, between SPF 15 and SPF 30 you might expect double the protection. However, SPF 30 only blocks an additional 4% of UV rays, blocking 97% in total, whereas SPF 15 blocks 93%. But with a higher SPF comes a greater number of harmful chemicals.
It is important to also remember that high number SPFs last the same amount of time as low number SPFs. A high number SPF does not allow you to spend additional time outdoors without reapplication. Sunscreens should be reapplied approximately every two hours when outdoors, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
Research has shown that the chemicals contained in many high SPF sunscreens can penetrate the skin and turn into harmful compounds which damage cell DNA.
A recent American study showed that it took just one day for several common sunscreen ingredients to enter the bloodstream at levels high enough to trigger a government investigation. Some of these included Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Ecamsule and Octocrylebe, they have been linked to allergic reactions, hormone disruptions and even skin cancer. It is important when looking for an SPF to check the ingredients and if possible, stay clear from products with these ingredients.
An effective sunscreen should contain broad spectrum protection and antioxidants. The addition of antioxidants helps to combat free radical damage caused by UV rays, adding a second line of defence.
The importance of having a broad spectrum SPF means that your skin is being protected from both UVA (ageing rays) and UVB (burning rays).
You should also consider the harmful chemicals that are in SPFs and the damage that they can cause to marine life. Did you know that 14,000 tonnes of sunscreen chemicals are washed into the ocean each year, damaging marine life and coral reefs.
At Rebecca Jade, we have carefully selected a range of SPFs of different factors that also improve your skin whilst protecting it. Our mineral makeup line, Jane Iredale, also use SPF in most of their products for extra protection. Environ's RAD SPF and Jane Iredale sunscreen products are reef-safe too, so they keep the oceans beautiful as well as your skin.
